THE STORY OF A CRAZY IDEA TURNING INTO BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS


Recently I finished reading the book ‘Shoe Dog’. I heard the name of this book being suggested by many people as ‘worth reading for’. But never thought that it will turn out to be one of the excellent books in my collection. It not only narrates the story of a man who relentlessly followed his dreams; But it also depicts an ideal illustration of team work & sacrifices. ‘Nike’ was the result of hard work & perseverance of many people who laid the solid foundation for its success. The billion dollar business empire of today  started its journey from just fifty dollars. What amazed me the most was not his dream, but the indomitable courage & vision of the founder –‘Phil Knight’.

The story of ‘Shoe Dog’ revolves around the life of an MBA graduate who had no idea what he has to do in life. The only thing in his mind was to become successful. Everything began from a mere crazy idea which he was not going to give up however worse the circumstances may be & it is this determination that pushed him forward to attain his goal. This story not only inspires us to follow our dream amidst all the odds, but it also urges us to have a dream, however crazy it might be. We should believe in our capabilities & should not be bemused by the words of others. Also it emphasizes the qualities of a good leader; the author often says ‘Don’t tell the people how to do it, just tell them what to do & let them surprise you with their results’. He was a good colleague to his co workers & illustrated the importance of coordination & team work for the success of an organisation. Nike didn’t became the most preferred brand in one day, rather it is the product of many new innovative ideas which the founder & his colleagues implemented each day. Phil Knight never turned a blind eye to any of the new ideas which indicated his strong desire to become the best brand in the world.

This book is a must read one for all the MBA students because it highlights the importance of many management qualities like innovation, leadership, commitment, coordination, selflessness, trust, communication, etc. which will help every student to achieve success in their professional life. It also serves as a source of inspiration for all the budding entrepreneurs because it has very beautifully explained the struggles faced by an  entrepreneur at every stages of the business development.
